RESEARCH SERVICES
Image-guided (Stereotactic) Biopsy Research: Dr. Walker participated in a national study
evaluating the effectiveness and safety of image-guided biopsy to sample lesions which were
seen only on x-ray (mammogram). The results of these collaborative studies paved the way for
all women to receive the benefits of this technique.
Sentinel Node Biopsy Research: Our Center participated in one of the early local trials of using a
radioactive tracer and a visible dye to isolate and locate only those lymph nodes to which the
cancer was most likely to have spread, if at all. The studies have now proved the safety and
efficacy of this technique.
Body Image and Depression in Breast Cancer Survivors Research: Our Center has recently
participated in an exciting thesis project which looked at the problem of depression as it
relates to body image in women who have undergone mastectomy either with or without
reconstruction.
Clinical Trials: Our Center's patients have access to clinical trials which are performed either
locally, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, or at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the NIH.
